What is Yoga?
The word yoga comes from the root word ‘yuj’ in Sanskrit, the language of ancient India. Yoga, a 5000 year old tradition means union, integration, or wholeness. It is an approach to health and well-being that promotes the harmonious collaboration of the human being’s three components: body, mind, and spirit through the means of various breathing exercises, yoga poses (asanas) and meditation.
June 21st was declared as the International Day of Yoga on December 11 in 2014, by the United Nations General Assembly. Mr Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India began the process. A total of 177 nations co-sponsored the undertaking, making it the highest number of co-sponsors for a UNGA plan of this nature to date. Today yoga is practiced in a wide variety of forms around the world and it continues to grow in popularity. Yoga benefits its millions of practitioners globally, instilling the importance of integrating it into our daily lives.
“Like a flower bud, human life has the potential to blossom fully. Blossoming of human potential to fullness is yoga” · Sri Sri Ravi Shankar
Why Yoga ?
Yoga is a practice for aligning the body, mind and breath. With the help of different body postures, meditation and breathing techniques, one can improve the overall well being. During these Covid19 times, the importance of good physical and mental health cannot be overemphasized. As physical activities have become limited in the past few months, Yoga works as a good exercise and a detox tool, both for the body and the mind.
As per The World Health Organization, lack of physical activity is among the top ten leading causes of death worldwide. Inactivity is a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. As highlighted in WHO’s recently released Global Action Plan on Physical Activity 2018-2030, the routine practice of yoga is a valuable tool for people of all ages to make physical activity an integral part of life and reach the level needed to promote good health. Promoted by The United Nations and WHO Yoga is becoming a hallmark of modern-day best practices for a healthier lifestyle in times of COVID-19.
